L. B. Russell to Lucy Chase, Boston, December 23, 1862

Boston, Dec. 23d, 1862,

Dear Miss Chase,

I have the pleasure of informing you that at a meeting of the Committee on Teachers of the Educational Commission today you & your sister were chosen Teachers to go to Craney Island for the instruction & care of the colored refugees there, under a pass from Brig. Genl. Viele, Military Governor.

The salary of each will be twenty five dollars per month, & twenty dollars as outfit. The first month's salary & the outfit will be paid in advance, if desired.

It is presumed that the expenses of the journey will be nearly covered by the pass from Genl. Viele. You will please keep account of other travelling expenses & they will be refunded to you--

Please write me an receipt of this stating whether you accept the appointment, & if so at what time you will be ready to start.

If you prefer to go from Worcester & not to come again to Boston, it can be arranged. It may be better however for one of you to come on to get the pass, & to make arrangements as to funds &c.

Please give me the name of each, in full, that I may insert it in the pass.

I am, with best regards

Yours very truly

L B Russell.
