S. W. Cope to Lucy Chase, March 27, 1864

Respected friend

Lucy Chase--

The opportunity offering of sending this by E. M. Laurin I felt as tho this message for me included in thy letter to Madgin required an acknowledgment & an answer, as regards the six orphan children thou proposes sending; I would suggest that the two young men who are coming from the Association here, might bring them when they return--we will take them into our "Home for Destitute Coloured Children" & then transfer them to the Shelter for Coloured Orphans, when they have concluded to receive such--our friend E Y? has just returned, bringing six with her from Yorktown, & they are now comfortably domiciliated in the Shelter, where they will be nicely cared for, & attend a good school in the house.

I have often regretted that our visit to your precincts was so short, as your surroundings frustrated the phase we so wished to see, those who were but just rescued from the jaws of slavery--we feel in hopes that our friend Lydia Pope will go to Yorktown to take charge of the domestic department at the Mission House there--with kind remembrance of thy Sister--J.M.L. Collins truly thine in the work--SW Cope
